
Two electric SUVs landed within months of each other at nearly the same price, and they are asking you to do completely different things. The Rivian R2 Performance Launch Edition starts at $57,990. The Tesla Model Y L Launch Series starts at $61,990.
Add the two options I would choose on the Rivian—Midnight paint and the 20-inch Black Sand all-terrain wheel and tire package—and its subtotal reaches $60,990. That leaves only a $1,000 gap before destination and other fees, making these two direct rivals on the window sticker.
They are not direct rivals anywhere else. One seats five and the other seats six, and once you know which number you need, the Rivian R2 vs Tesla Model Y L question mostly answers itself.
The short version
If you only need five seats, the R2 is the better vehicle. It has nearly three more inches of ground clearance, real off-road hardware, over 150 more horsepower, a perpetual driver-assistance license instead of a monthly subscription, and it does not look like a jellybean.
If you need six seats, the Model Y L is the answer, and it is not close, because the R2 does not offer a third row at any trim. Your only other Rivian option is the R1S, which lives in a different price bracket entirely. The Model Y L also wins rear-seat cooling outright. Its shape also suggests a meaningful highway-efficiency advantage, but there is not yet an independent real-world highway test of the longer Model Y L itself.
Strip away everything else and two questions decide this. How many seats do you need, and which one do you want to look at every morning? The prices are within a thousand dollars of each other, and both charge on the same connector.
I have not driven either one. Everything below comes from reviewers who have, and I have credited each of them at the bottom of this post. What I have done is spend a lot of time with the specs, the independent testing, and the early ownership reports, because I am shopping this segment myself.
Price is closer than the trim names suggest
The Model Y L Launch Series lists at $61,990 before destination and other fees. That figure carries a lot: special badging and puddle lights, a year of Full Self-Driving, a year of premium connectivity, a year of Supercharging, and an acceleration boost that drops the zero to sixty time from 4.4 seconds to 4.2. Tesla has said cheaper trims will follow, which is the pattern with every model they launch.
The Rivian looks cheaper until you build one. The R2 Performance starts at $57,990 with the Launch Package, Autonomy+, the tow package, and the launch key fob all included, which is a lot of content for the money. Add the two options I would choose—$2,000 Midnight paint and the $1,000 20-inch Black Sand all-terrain wheel and tire package—and the subtotal reaches $60,990. For an apples-to-apples comparison, I am using both vehicles’ subtotals before destination and other fees.
So the real spread between a well-equipped R2 Performance Launch Edition and a Model Y L Launch Series is closer to a thousand dollars than to five thousand. That matters, because a $1,000 difference is not a reason to pick a vehicle. Everything else is.
Cheaper versions of both are coming. Rivian has a Premium trim at $53,990 and a Standard in the high forties, with a rear-drive version dipping under $45,000. Rivian has moved those dates and specs more than once, so confirm the current configuration before you put money down.
The boxy one is the smaller one
Comparing the manufacturers’ own published dimensions produced a result I did not expect. The Model Y L is the larger vehicle almost everywhere. It is 195.9 inches long against the R2’s 185.9, a full ten inches, and it rides on a 119.7-inch wheelbase against 115.6. Width is a tie once you fold the mirrors, at 78.0 inches for the Tesla and 78.1 for the Rivian. The R2 is taller, but only by 1.2 inches, at 66.9 against 65.7.
The interior numbers follow the same pattern. The Model Y L publishes more front headroom (41.6 inches against 40.9), more second-row headroom (41.9 against 40.4), and more front legroom (41.8 against 41.4). The R2 takes second-row legroom at 40.4 inches against 39.7, and that gap is smaller than the reviewer commentary would lead you to believe. The Model Y L’s second row also slides, so you can borrow legroom from the third row when nobody is sitting there.
For context on how much Tesla actually changed, the Model Y L is 7.0 inches longer than a standard Model Y Premium with 5.9 inches of that in the wheelbase, and it gained 2.5 inches of second-row headroom in the process. This is not two seats dropped into an existing trunk.
So the R2’s reputation for feeling roomy is not about being a bigger vehicle. It is about being a more efficiently shaped one. A rectangle uses its volume better than a teardrop, and that shows up in cargo and in sleeping flat rather than in the seating dimensions. The Tesla’s teardrop shape should help at highway speed, but how much it helps the longer and heavier Model Y L remains uncertain until that specific vehicle is independently tested.

Seats: this is the whole ballgame
The Model Y L is seven inches longer than a standard Model Y, and six of those inches went into the wheelbase. Tesla used that space for a third row and captain’s chairs in the middle, which means six seats total. There is no bench option, and that is deliberate, because the gap between the captain’s chairs is the primary way to reach the back. Tesla also widened the rear door opening by two inches to make climbing in easier.
The third row is a real third row rather than a marketing claim. A six foot three reviewer reported his head touching the roof but described the shoulder and knee room as surprisingly workable, helped by the ability to extend a leg into the aisle between the captain’s chairs. A five foot five passenger reported roughly three inches of headroom and called the legroom plenty. Reviewers at six foot four were more guarded and suggested capping third-row trips at thirty minutes to an hour. For kids and car seats, everyone agreed: the packaging is excellent, and one reviewer fit three car seats plus a full-size stroller.
The published numbers frame the limits: 38.1 inches of third-row headroom against 41.9 in the second row, 31.0 inches of legroom against 39.7, and 42.9 inches of shoulder room against 54.5. That last figure is the one to notice. The third row is a two-person space, and Tesla built it that way.
The third row is better equipped than the segment norm. It gets heated seats, third-row vents, USB-C ports, cup holders, an armrest, a recline button, its own speakers, and child tether anchors. Tesla made third-row side airbags standard and redesigned the rear crash structure and crumple zones, which is not something every three-row EV can claim. Tesla also tripled the size of the rear quarter window and relocated the third brake light into the spoiler, which adds headroom and makes the back feel far less like a cave.
One design miss deserves mention. There is no interior release to open the trunk from the cargo area, so a child who ends up back there cannot let himself out.
The R2 seats five, full stop. In exchange, the second row is the roomiest place in either vehicle for legs. A six foot three passenger sitting behind a six-foot driver reported being able to stretch out almost fully, and Marques Brownlee found more rear legroom in the R2 than in his own R1T pickup.
The published gap over the Model Y L is only seven tenths of an inch, so some of that impression comes from the R2’s flat floor and upright seating position rather than from raw measurement. The Model Y L answers with an inch and a half more second-row headroom.
Rear climate control: the Model Y L wins this outright
This is the category nobody puts in a spec sheet and everybody notices in August. In our house, the kids complain that our current first gen R1S takes forever to cool down in the second row because there are only vents in the center console, and the difference against our minivan is obvious. The Odyssey has overhead vents feeding the second and third rows, and it simply works better.
Tesla clearly thought about this. The Model Y L has dedicated vents in the pillar for both the second and third rows, and reviewers made a point of noting that the third-row vents actively blow air rather than passively bleeding it back like the Model X did. The second-row seats are heated and ventilated, and the third row gets heat as well. Tesla upgraded the thermal system to what it calls the Super Manifold V2, claiming roughly fifteen percent faster cabin cooling and a twenty-three percent thermal efficiency gain in hot weather. The glass roof uses a triple silver coating that Tesla says cuts solar energy entering the cabin by about thirty percent, and the hatch glass gets a metallic tint. One reviewer put his hand on the treated and untreated sections of glass on an eighty-nine degree day and described the difference as dramatic. Another, sitting in the third row, reported feeling no heat radiating off the hatch at all.
The R2 does not match this. Second-row air comes from two vents at the back of the center console, and that is the extent of it. There are no pillar vents and no cargo-area vents, which owners are already discussing in the Rivian forums, particularly people who planned to put a dog behind the second row. Rivian’s own R1S has C-pillar vents because it has a third row to feed. The R2 does not, so it does not.
If you live somewhere hot and you regularly carry passengers in the back, this is a real consideration and not a nitpick. Houston summers make it a real consideration for me.
Range, efficiency, and charging
The Model Y L is rated at roughly 325 miles on the twenty-inch wheels, with the nineteen-inch option adding about five miles. The battery is around 83 kWh. That aerodynamic shape you may not love is doing work: the integrated spoiler drops the drag coefficient to 0.216, which is exceptional for a vehicle this size.
The R2 has a larger 88 kWh usable pack and an EPA combined rating of up to 330 miles. On the window sticker these two are a wash. They carry the same 105 MPGe efficiency rating and their range figures land within five miles of each other, so a buyer comparing spec sheets would reasonably conclude that range is not a differentiator here.
On the road it is. The explanation is not that either manufacturer cheated. Kyle Conner, who ran the testing, points out that Rivian and Tesla used different EPA test cycles, both permitted under current rules, which produces two numbers that look directly comparable and are not. This is a problem with the certification process rather than with either vehicle, and it is worth understanding before you shop on rated range alone.
Out of Spec Reviews and RivianTrackr ran an R2 Performance and a standard Model Y Performance simultaneously on the same North Carolina interstate at a GPS-verified 70 miles per hour until both batteries died. The R2 covered 253 miles. The standard Model Y covered 310.1, beating its own EPA rating.
Both vehicles carry an identical 105 MPGe efficiency rating from the EPA, and across multiple test scenarios the R2 consumed 18 to 26 percent more energy. Tom Moloughney at State of Charge got a similar R2 result independently, covering 264 miles at 70 miles per hour and concluding that the R2 will not reach 300 highway miles on any tire.
Two caveats matter. That head-to-head used a standard Model Y rather than the longer, heavier Model Y L, so it does not establish the Model Y L’s real-world highway range. The R2 test also ran in 98-degree heat with the air conditioning working hard, which is close to a worst case.
The available evidence suggests that the Rivian’s upright, boxier shape makes it less efficient at highway speed, but the size of any gap against the Model Y L remains unknown until the longer Tesla is tested under comparable conditions.
On charging, Rivian stuck with a 400-volt architecture to keep costs down, then gave the R2 the ability to pull over 600 amps to compensate. Tom Moloughney with State of Charge recorded a 10 to 80 percent charge in just under 27 minutes against Rivian’s own 29-minute claim, with a peak of 226 kW. That is a good result, with one catch: very few DC fast chargers can actually deliver 600 amps. On a more common 500-amp charger, expect to lose a minute or two. Above eighty percent the curve collapses. Going from 80 to 90 percent took eleven minutes, and the final five percent took forty-six minutes on its own.
The Model Y L peaks at 250 kW and adds about 164 miles in fifteen minutes, which is a touch slower than the standard Model Y Premium at 169 miles. Neither vehicle is class-leading on charging speed. The difference is the network. Tesla has roughly 75,000 Superchargers and routing that plans your stops for you. The R2 has native NACS and access to a meaningful portion of the Supercharger network, plus Rivian’s own Adventure Network, but Gjeebs, who owns both a Model Y and a Rivian, was direct about it: he drove the Tesla across the country rather than the Rivian specifically because of the charging network and the self-driving. On efficiency and road-trip simplicity, the Model Y L wins.
Power, ride, and the road versus dirt question
The Model Y L makes 496 horsepower and hits sixty in 4.4 seconds, or 4.2 with the acceleration boost included on the Launch Series. The dual-motor R2 makes over 650 horsepower with 609 pound-feet of torque and does it in roughly 3.6 seconds. Brownlee noted that the more impressive number is not the launch but the fifty to seventy mile per hour pull, which keeps going.
Both vehicles use valved, semi-active dampers rather than air suspension. Tesla added a rear comfort mode that shifts damping priority to the back seats. Reviewers testing it blind reported mixed results, and a Tesla engineer explained why: the mode is tuned for wavy roads with vertical body movement rather than sharp impacts, so on typical broken pavement you will not feel much. Rivian runs two algorithms continuously, one holding the body level against road inputs and a feed-forward system that adjusts damping as you steer, accelerate, or brake. The R2 also uses an isolated subframe, which the R1 did not have, and it noticeably cuts noise transmission into the cabin.
Where they separate is ground clearance. The R2 sits at 9.6 inches. Tesla publishes 6.7 inches unladen for the Model Y L, dropping to 4.8 inches laden, so the working gap is close to three inches and grows once you load the vehicle. Rivian also publishes a 25-degree approach angle, a 26-degree departure angle, and 20.6 degrees of breakover, which are numbers Tesla does not publish because they would not flatter the Model Y L. Reviewers took the R2 rock crawling with the all-terrain tires aired down to 25 PSI and reported it handled terrain most owners will never attempt. Brownlee described the Model Y L’s road manners as more tied down and sportier, while the R2 sits higher and feels more like a traditional SUV with more body roll. Neither observation is a criticism. They were built for different jobs.
Visibility favors the Rivian at the A-pillars and the Tesla at the back, which surprised me. The Model Y L’s relocated brake light and enlarged rear glass gave reviewers noticeably better rearward sightlines than the standard Model Y with its heavily sloped hatch.
Software and driver assistance
Tesla’s Full Self-Driving is the strongest argument for the Model Y L, and reviewers who own both brands say so plainly. It handles twisty canyon roads, construction zones, and traffic intersections with what one reviewer described as no hesitation. The cost is $99 per month, though the Launch Series includes the first year.
Rivian’s approach is different. Autonomy+ is a $2,500 perpetual license, included on the R2 Launch Edition, with no monthly fee. Today it delivers universal hands-free driving on about 3.5 million miles of mapped roads. Traffic light and stop sign control, off-highway lane changes, and automated parking are all slated to arrive within months of launch, with point-to-point navigation following. Lidar hardware and eyes-off capability are targeted around the end of 2027, and per Rivian’s own team, R2s with and without lidar will have the same features for the next few years.
The gap is real, and it comes down to what you value. Tesla’s system works now and costs $1,188 a year once the included year ends. Rivian’s system costs once and is on a roadmap. Neither vehicle offers Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.
Cargo and camping
The Model Y L holds 14.8 cubic feet behind the third row, 38 with the third row folded, 85 behind the first row, and 89 counting the frunk. Tesla widened the liftgate opening, added cargo hooks and a 12-volt outlet for a portable fridge, and built in a deep sub-trunk with a cover that magnetizes to the third row so you can fill both at once. The power-folding rows are genuinely smart: fold the third row and the second and first rows slide forward automatically to make space. The Model Y L and the Model Y Performance are also the only two Model Y variants that support vehicle-to-load, and the adapter comes in the box.
Rivian lists the R2 at 28.7 cubic feet behind the second row and 79.4 with the rear seats folded, plus 5.2 in the frunk, reaching 90.1 cubic feet of total storage. Tesla’s own figure for the Model Y L is 89.7. That is a four-tenths of a cubic foot difference between a vehicle that is ten inches shorter and one that is not, which says everything about what a rectangle does with its volume.
Underneath the total, the two split the categories. The Model Y L holds more behind the first row with everything folded, 85.6 against 79.4, and its 38.0 cubic feet with just the third row down beats the R2’s 28.7 behind its only rear row. The R2 takes the frunk at 5.2 against 4.1 and makes up the rest of its total in the sub-trunk and cabin storage. Call the overall capacity a tie and pick based on which configuration you will actually use.
Towing favors the Rivian, although either vehicle will cover the needs of many buyers. The R2 Performance and R2 Premium are rated to tow up to 4,400 pounds, while the future rear-wheel-drive R2 is rated at 3,500 pounds. Tesla rates the Model Y L to tow up to 3,500 pounds with its Class II steel tow bar. The Rivian therefore provides an extra 900 pounds of rated capacity in the Performance and Premium versions.
Camping is a different story, and the shape decides it. The R2 has a second-row bench that folds completely flat, and the front seats fold flat as well, producing one continuous rectangular surface. Rivian sells a mattress accessory built for it and has said a 95th-percentile male can lie flat inside. The roofline stays upright from the hatch forward.
The Model Y L cannot match that, and the reason is the captain’s chairs. There is no bench option, which means a gap runs down the middle between the two second-row seats and another gap opens between the second and third rows. The seat backs are molded rather than flat. A reviewer who camps in his vehicles measured more peak vertical space in the Model Y L than in a Model X or an R1S, but that is a single measurement at the highest point of a roofline that tapers steadily toward the hatch. The R2 does not taper. If you plan to sleep in the vehicle regularly, the Rivian is the better platform, and it is not particularly close.
Where the Model Y L keeps an edge is climate. Camp mode holds cabin temperature all night, and the pillar vents actually reach the back of the vehicle. The R2 has no cargo-area vents at all, which is worth thinking about if you are sleeping back there in August.

Rivian R2 pros and cons
What it does well:
- Over 650 horsepower and a zero to sixty time in the mid threes
- 9.6 inches of ground clearance and genuine off-road capability
- Exceptional second-row legroom for the vehicle’s footprint
- Driver assistance is a one-time $2,500 purchase rather than a subscription
- Boxy, upright styling that will not be mistaken for anything else on the road
- Two gloveboxes, front seats that fold flat, and a deep underfloor cargo well
- A second-row bench and an upright roofline that make it the better camping platform
Where it falls short:
- Five seats only, with no third-row option at any trim
- Covered 253 miles at 70 mph against the Model Y’s 310 in a simultaneous head-to-head test
- Uses 18 to 26 percent more energy than the Model Y despite an identical EPA efficiency rating
- Rear climate is limited to two console vents, with nothing feeding the cargo area
- Peak charging speed requires a 600-amp charger that most people will rarely find
- The price advantage largely evaporates once you add paint and wheels
- Several advertised software features have not shipped yet
Tesla Model Y L pros and cons
What it does well:
- Six seats with a third row that adults can tolerate and kids will not think twice about
- Active pillar vents for both rear rows, plus heated and ventilated second-row seats
- Standard third-row side airbags and a redesigned rear crash structure
- More front and second-row headroom than the R2 on published specs
- Full Self-Driving works today and remains the strongest system you can buy
- The Supercharger network makes road trips simpler than any competitor
- An aerodynamic shape that should help highway efficiency, although the Model Y L itself has not yet been independently tested
- A 19-speaker system that reviewers consistently rated near the top of the class
Where it falls short:
- Roughly $12,000 more than a standard Model Y Premium
- 6.7 inches of ground clearance unladen and 4.8 laden, which rules out anything past a gravel road
- No driver display and no head-up display, so everything lives on the center screen
- The gear selector lives on the touchscreen, which reviewers found irritating during three-point turns
- No interior button to release the trunk from the cargo area
- FSD becomes a $1,188 annual expense once the included year ends
- At this price you are shopping against a used Model X
Who should buy which
Buy the Rivian R2 if you need five seats or fewer, you already have a second vehicle that handles the bigger trips, you want ground clearance and all-terrain capability, you plan to sleep in it, and you would rather pay once for driver assistance than subscribe to it. This is where I land personally. We have a minivan for the six-and-seven-passenger days, which frees the second vehicle to be the one I actually want to drive and the one I would rather look at in the driveway.
Buy the Tesla Model Y L if you need six seats, if you road-trip often enough that the Supercharger network is worth real money to you, or if you live somewhere hot and you are tired of hearing about it from the back seat. Full Self-Driving is a genuine differentiator, and no competitor currently matches it.
Skip both if you regularly need seven or eight seats, in which case a minivan remains the correct answer and always has been. Skip the R2 specifically if you routinely drive more than 250 highway miles between stops. And skip both for another six to twelve months if price is your deciding factor, because cheaper trims of each are coming.
What should not decide this is price, because the gap is about a thousand dollars, or charging, because both use NACS. It comes down to seat count and to which one you would rather look at. That second question sounds unserious until you remember you will see this vehicle every single day for the next several years.

All-Weather Floor Mats
Floor mats are one of the first accessories I buy for a new vehicle. At launch, the only R2-specific all-weather mats currently available are Rivian’s own factory mats.
Once WeatherTech or TuxMat releases an R2 version, I will probably choose one of those instead. I have purchased both brands before and generally prefer them to the OEM or dealer-offered alternatives because of their coverage, fit, and durability. For anyone who wants mats immediately, however, Rivian’s version is the only R2-specific option currently available.

Dimensional and cargo specifications came from pages 212 and 213 of the Chinese-market Tesla Model Y Owner’s Manual, using the six-seat Model Y L tables rather than the five-seat Model Y Premium tables, and from Rivian’s published R2 specifications page. Neither set came from a third-party summary. Tesla’s exterior figures were converted from millimeters and rounded to the nearest tenth. I am flagging the market because the Model Y L was designed in China and launched there first, and U.S.-spec figures can differ from the Chinese manual in both measurements and features. Prices, specifications, and software timelines in this segment change frequently, so verify current numbers with each manufacturer before you order.
